Jerry Coleman, 1924-2014

I’m at a loss for words. Jerry Coleman was an American hero and a baseball icon… a San Diego legend. I’m terribly saddened by his passing. A day that started with the Chargers winning a playoff game, and the Aztecs beating the Jayhawks had San Diego sports fans on cloud nine… only for us all to be brought to our knees with the news of The Colonel passing.

I was blessed to spend time with Jerry on a couple different occasions. He had me rolling with laughter telling me stories about his duties ‘babysitting’ my baseball idol, Mickey Mantle. Somebody had to protect Mickey from Mickey.

I’ve heard, and read, some powerful words about Jerry. Here they two of them from his broadcast partners: From Ted Leitner. From Andy Masur. Here’s another one from the U-T’s Bill Center.

Prayers to Jerry’s family. What an amazing life he led.
